The Isibaya actress was allegedly clocked at 198km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N2 near Ellingham and is due back in the Scottburgh court on Wednesday.
Actress and model Asavela Mqokiyana is due back in the Scottburgh Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, 28 October, accused of driving at 198km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N2 in KwaZulu-Natal.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport made the case public on Tuesday. It says a Road Traffic Inspectorate team from Park Rynie stopped her BMW X3 on the N2 near Ellingham, on the South Coast, during its Nenzani LaEzweni road-safety operation. At 198km/h, the car was allegedly travelling 78km/h over the limit. IOL reported that she was stopped on 16 October, and several outlets reported that she first appeared in court on 19 October.
The speed is an allegation at this stage. She has not been convicted, and none of the reports published on Tuesday carried a comment from Mqokiyana or her representatives. Wednesday's appearance may postpone the matter, or it may move it towards a plea. Nothing in the reports available this morning records the outcome of that appearance.
Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya confirmed the arrest to IOL.
"A reminder to all motorists that the Nenzani La Ezweni Operation is still in full swing."
Transport MEC Siboniso Duma used the case to warn holiday drivers. The Mail & Guardian quoted him:
"KwaZulu-Natal will have no mercy this festive season as demonstrated by this high-profile arrest."
The Witness quoted him as saying the arrest showed "no one is above the law".
The department's spelling of the operation is not consistent across the reports. IOL and the Mail & Guardian give Sibiya's line as "Nenzani La Ezweni". Other reports of the same operation use "Nenzani LaEzweni". The quotes above follow the outlet that carried each line.
The department released the case alongside its figures for 15 to 21 October. Over that week its inspectors and Operation Shanela teams stopped 12,073 vehicles and charged 1,719 motorists, 421 of them for speeding. Another 26 operations, plus 15 aimed at drunk driving, were planned for 22 to 28 October.
Mqokiyana's stop, on IOL's account, was on 16 October, inside that reporting week. The department chose to make the arrest public on 27 October, the day before she was due back in Scottburgh. The figures and the arrest were released together. The figures are the department's count of a week of enforcement. The 198km/h is still an allegation about one car.
Mqokiyana is best known to television audiences for Isibaya, the Mzansi Magic drama, where she played Ntwenhle from 2018 to 2021. Most of Tuesday's reports identified her by that show. She also works as a model.
Her case has also raised the question of how far officials should go in naming people they arrest. On Tuesday TimesLIVE ran a reader poll asking whether it is fair for images of public figures' arrests to be shared on social media. The court has made no finding yet.
