kykNET has renewed Die Kantoor, its Afrikaans The Office, after the first season earned five Silwerskerm nominations and two acting wins this year.
Die Kantoor is coming back for a second season. The South African version of The Office has a renewal after a debut run that found both an audience and awards recognition.
Nomsa Philiso, the CANAL+ group's content head for Africa, announced the renewal during the opening session of FAME Week Africa in Cape Town on Wednesday, 28 October. kykNET confirmed the news in a statement released the same day.
The broadcaster has not yet announced when production will begin or when the new season will reach screens. It has also not confirmed the episode count, or whether the full first-season cast will return. The renewal itself is the development. The mockumentary will have another chapter. Its broadcast plan is still under wraps.
Die Kantoor is the licensed Afrikaans adaptation of the BBC Studios comedy format created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. The local version moves the workplace awkwardness to Deluxe Processed Meats, an East Rand polony business run by the painfully self-confident Flip, played by Albert Pretorius.
The first season premiered on kykNET on 18 January 2026 and arrived on Showmax two days later. That January arrival on Showmax is history. Showmax closed at the end of April 2026, the same month the 13-episode run ended, so it is not a place to watch the series now. Catch-up sits with kykNET on DStv.
Bennie Fourie, who adapted the format and served as head writer and director, used the familiar fly-on-the-wall style to build a distinctly South African office. The production was made by Rapid Blue, part of BBC Studios.
Alongside Pretorius, the ensemble included Schalk Bezuidenhout, Lida Botha, Carl Beukes, Ilse Oppelt, Daniah de Villiers, Mehboob Bawa, Sipumziwe Lucwaba, and Gert du Plessis. Their characters turned the factory office into a collision of workplace politics, strained team-building, and misplaced managerial confidence.
The first season received five nominations at the 2026 Silwerskerm Awards for Film and Television. Pretorius won best actor in a television comedy for his performance as Flip. Bezuidenhout won best supporting actor in a television comedy.
Those results give the renewal a firmer foundation than novelty alone. International comedy formats can travel easily in name, but their humour depends on local detail. Die Kantoor's first season kept the documentary-style glances and uncomfortable silences associated with The Office, and gave the workplace a specifically Afrikaans and South African rhythm.
Fourie said in kykNET's announcement that the team was grateful for the opportunity to return. Philiso framed the renewal as part of the group's commitment to African stories and creators. Those are the announcement's paraphrases. The statement as used here does not carry a longer verbatim line to quote. The announcement was made at an industry gathering centred this year on the creator economy and the future of African entertainment.
The timing also makes the renewal one of the clearest television announcements to come out of FAME Week Africa's opening day. Rather than unveiling a distant development slate, CANAL+ and kykNET confirmed a follow-up to a series viewers have already seen and awards judges have already recognised.
The unanswered questions now concern the shape of season two. kykNET has not said which characters will be back, whether the story will resume immediately after the first-season finale, or how closely the new episodes will draw on earlier versions of The Office.
That leaves the creative team room to expand Deluxe Processed Meats on its own terms. The first season had to introduce a familiar format in a new language and setting. A second can spend more time with the office's relationships, rivalries, and small humiliations without establishing the premise from scratch.
Until production and broadcast details are announced, the first season is the one that already exists: 13 episodes, premiered on kykNET on 18 January, awards in hand. Season two is official. Its start date is not. Watching it is a kykNET and DStv question, not a Showmax one.
