DJ Maphorisa has rejected the widely repeated claim that his father is Nigerian, correcting a detail that has appeared in profiles and search results about his background for years.
The issue came up during his appearance on Tim Sweeney’s Beats in Space on Apple Music. When Sweeney referred to Maphorisa’s father as Nigerian, the producer immediately said no and clarified that his grandfather is from Mozambique.
The exchange is brief, but it matters because it comes from Maphorisa himself rather than from a secondary biography.
The Nigerian-father description has appeared in published profiles, including older international coverage. Once that kind of detail is copied across biography pages and search results, repetition can make it look settled even when the subject has never confirmed it.
Maphorisa’s own account now gives a clearer factual baseline: he identifies the relevant family connection as Mozambican, not Nigerian.
The correction does not change Maphorisa’s long professional relationship with Nigerian artists or the role Nigeria has played in the international movement of African pop. His catalogue and collaborations connect him to artists including Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy, while amapiano and Afrobeats have continued to overlap commercially across markets.
But collaboration, influence and ancestry are separate facts. The useful correction from the Apple Music interview is that a commonly repeated biographical detail should no longer be presented as confirmed simply because it has appeared in multiple places online.
For a producer whose career is increasingly global, getting the basic record right matters.
