Pieter-Dirk Uys's satirical character returns for a single Market Theatre appearance on 21 October during the venue's 50th-anniversary year.
Evita Bezuidenhout is returning to Johannesburg’s Market Theatre for a single performance on 21 October, bringing one of South Africa’s longest-running satirical characters back to a venue closely associated with her early history.
Created and performed by Pieter-Dirk Uys, Evita first entered the public conversation in the early 1980s. The character became a distinctive voice of political satire, reflecting the contradictions of apartheid South Africa and later the country’s democratic transition.
The Market Theatre describes the appearance as part of its 50th-anniversary year. The return is particularly resonant because the venue has long been associated with challenging theatre and performances that confront the political and social questions of their time.
Evita’s fictional public life has moved through changing governments and political fashions, allowing Uys to satirise the language, personalities and rituals of power. Her longevity also makes the performance a meeting of several generations of South African theatre audiences.
The character’s announced age of 91 is part of that continuing comic biography. The upcoming appearance offers an opportunity to revisit how political satire changes when its subject is no longer the same political order that first inspired it.
The performance is scheduled for Wednesday 21 October at the Market Theatre in Newtown, Johannesburg. The theatre’s official channels carry current booking and programme information.
