Maglera Doe Boy is making his acting debut in Mzansi, a two-part short film shot in Johannesburg and Mozambique, in which he stars alongside fellow rappers 25K and Young Stunna.
He told Forbes Africa, in an interview in New York, that the film premieres in Johannesburg on 26 October, with a second screening and a livestream on 2 November. SA Hip Hop Mag, Bona, The Citizen and The National all reported those dates. A TimesLIVE interview published on Monday gave different ones: a YouTube screening on 2 November and the Johannesburg premiere on 9 November. No venue has been announced.
The rapper, born Tokelo Moyakhe and raised in Kanana township near Klerksdorp, told TimesLIVE: "Mzansi is based around inter-provincial and cross-border street culture." Reports of the Forbes Africa interview describe a story built around hip-hop, fashion and a forbidden romance. He framed it as a southern African film rather than only a South African one, blending local street culture with Mozambique's.
Asked what acting had taught him, he gave TimesLIVE a one-word answer: intention.
New songs are coming with the film. TimesLIVE named "Izinja", featuring 25K and Sir Trill, and a track with Young Stunna.
25K is a long-time collaborator. The pair released the Champion Music projects with DJ Sliqe in 2020 and 2022. Maglera's solo albums are Diaspora (2022) and Maglera Tapes (2024).
He won Best Male Artist and Best Remix at the South African Hip Hop Awards in 2022, and he was nominated for BET Hip Hop Awards in 2024 and 2025. He is signed to Epic Records, which is also Tyla's label.
He told TimesLIVE that any collaboration with Tyla would have to make creative sense first. "I wouldn't want to do things for the sake of doing them just because we're South Africans," he said. He also recalled her bringing him on stage at the South African Music Awards in August.
He named Swizz Beatz as a mentor, and A$AP Rocky, with whom he worked on a Puma campaign, as an influence on his art.
